Spring Break cut from Joanna and Gordy to a hallway backstage where FAWN social media director Mel Sutton stood beside Lily Burlingame. “Great action so far tonight here at Spring Break.” Mel told the folks at home following a chipper smile. “With plenty more still to come. One of those matches is the Lightweight Title tilt pitting champion Bunny Cooper against challenger Zoë Scott in what promises to be a clash of styles AND personalities. With me now is former Lightweight Champion and bipedal highlight reel Lily Burlingame to offer some insight. Thanks for the time, Lily.”
The Star Strider nodded and offered an easy smile. “You’re welcome, Mel. I think these two ladies have a real chance to steal the show tonight. Bunny’s come into her own as the powerhouse of the division and Scotty, love her or hate her, never fails to make an impression.”
“If you had to pick winner based on what we’ve seen from these ladies so far, who would get the nod?” Mel asked.
“I have no doubt Zoë will give Bunny a heck of a fight, but I’m not sure she’s got the big match experience to take the title off Cooper. My money’s on Bunny.” “But Scott does have ‘Bel Lamont in her corner and we know Zoe’s not afraid to use the big blonde if she finds herself in trouble.”
Burlingame nodded in agreement. “That’s true, but Zoe’s working against champion’s advantage tonight and I don’t know if she’d want to risk dropping a title match on a disqual--”
Lily stopped mid-sentence, interrupted by a series of faint, but heavy THUDS coming from around the corner at the far end of the hall.
“Jeeze guys, what’s this nonsense?” Sutton muttered. “Why does everyone think it’s funny to move equipment when I’m trying to shoot--”
There was a THWHUMP, followed by a low, unmistakable groan of pain.
Lily frowned, handed her mic to Mel. “I don’t think that’s equipment.” She turned away from the camera and strode down the hall toward the source of the disturbance.
Sutton followed with the cameraman in tow, though she was still several steps behind when Burlingame disappeared around the corner. “What do you see, Lil’?” Mel called. “Is everything--”
Lily stepped back into view, her face drawn and pale. “Go find Vannacutt. Now.”
Mel nodded, motioned for the cameraman to continue on. He did, and a few seconds later he rounded the corner. There was a muffled ‘oh jeeze’ before the man regained his composure and fell silent.
Before him, Lily Burlingame knelt over a blonde dressed in gold laid out on her side with something wrapped tight around her head. Working carefully, Lil’ grasped the young woman at shoulder and hip and rolled her onto her back. Frowning, the heiress carefully pulled the bunched fabric loose and realized it was a tee-shirt. Lily’d already made a guess, but the cartoon bee on the back confirmed her suspicions. “Holy crap, it’s Honey.” the brunette said to no one in particular. “Hold on girl, the doc’s on the way.
Harris stirred, coughed hard and tried to sit up, only to cry out and put a hand to the small of her back. Burlingame leaned over the fallen Brit, cringed when she spied the growing bruise on Honey’s lower back. “Huuuhhh…. help me sit up.” Honey tapped Lily’s knee to get her attention.
“Are you sure? Your back looks…. someone did a number on it.”
Harris grunted, put a hand against the floor and started to get up on her own, so Lily hooked on to help as best she could. “I know,” Honey said with a groan. “Bitch tried to put me through the window and when that didn’t work she choked me out.”
Startled, Lily looked up at the long rectangular window that looked in on a conference room and sure enough, there was an ugly spider-web of cracks in the spot just above Honey. “Shyt. I hope you got a few licks in.”
“Never saw her coming.” Harris grunted. “Witch hit me from behind, never even said a word.”
“You think it was Allison?” Lily looked around the empty hall, just in case Phi Theta Tappa still lurked nearby.
Honey took a ragged breath, cursed as another jolt of pain racked her back. “Or that slag, Sexton. Probably trying to get in Addison’s good graces by trying to knock me out of the match tonight. It’s not gonna work though, Allison’s ass belongs to me.”
Lily, who understood fighting spirit better than just about anyone, shook her head in concern. “I don’t know, Honey. Whoever she was, she did a number on your back and--”
Just then Dr. Vannacutt came around the corner flanked by a pair of EMT’s. They quickly took charge of the scene, leaving Lily to throw a hurried ‘cut away’ signal to the camera.
Moments later the feed returned to Joanna and Gordy.
