The audience had taken advantage of a slight pause in proceedings to patronise the concession stands, relieve their bladders, or just discuss the frenzied action they had already witnessed with the fans around them. That meant that only about two thirds were still in their seats when the huge entranceway FAWNtron flared unexpectedly to life.
The screens seemed to be showing an old fashioned flip clock, counting down from ten seconds. The clicks rang out sharply in the relatively quiet auditorium. It had reached 1:23 when the image suddenly froze and greyed out, the accompanying static noise bursting through the speakers.
Replacing the clock were two female faces, mostly wreathed in shadow, neither recognised by anyone in the arena. There was one very noticeable common feature though; both had a two-colour double chevron of facepaint drawn over their left eyesocket, one in bright neon, the other in more muted silver and charcoal.
One woman seemed to be smiling, the other scowling heavily into the camera. And then they both stepped back and were swallowed by shadow, the image fading back to the flip clock.
The digits resumed their countdown, reaching zero and carrying right on flipping. After another few seconds the finally settled not on numbers but letters, specifically ‘F’, ‘|’ and ‘C’. Those figures stayed on screen, holding steady for at least five seconds as the audience began to buzz about their significance.
It seemed like this little vignette was over, the screen beginning to fade back to black. But before it did there was one last ‘click’ from the timer. The three letters were gone, replaced by a single icon: eight arrows radiating outwards from a single point. This dissipated too, leaving behind nothing but a crowd who were busily speculating about what, or more accurately whom, this little teaser might be referring to. And they had barely begun before it was time for the next matchup.
