BACKGROUND:
Mia De La Fuentes was born in Austin, Texas, the daughter of an undocumented couple. An only child (her mother was pregnant with her when they entered the country), her parents worked multiple jobs and saved every single penny they could to ensure that their daughter had the brightest possible future in store for her.
As it happened, Mia turned out to be a bright, studious, hard working child. She excelled in school, earning a scholarship to Texas A&M where she entered the science program--physics, particularly. But a funny thing happened midway through her sophomore year...
Mia had always been a wrestling fan. It was one thing she and her father had in common, watching it most Saturday afternoons when he was home. One day, Mia went with her girlfriend Renee when she attempted to try out for a wrestling school. While Renee earned a spot in the school, the man in charge was REALLY impressed with Mia’s look and encouraged her to try out as well.
Initially, Mia thought she had to be crazy if she wanted to try training to be a wrestler while simultaneously studying in a demanding physics program. But eventually, she decided it might be fun to simply audition and see, figuring there was no downside to simply making the attempt. So Mia did--and got in herself.
Over time, Mia found that she enjoyed being inside the ropes every bit as much as she had enjoyed watching the action from the outside. Eventually, De La Fuentes graduated from training to working a live show... when the thought occurred to her that moonlighting on the side as a wrestler might not reflect well on her if people in the physics program found out--being taken seriously as a girl in the sciences had proven challenging enough to her--so Mia insisted on being allowed to wear a mask. And reflecting on her first impressions of the insanity of trying out coupled with her middle name, she devised the character of the Luna Chica.
The Luna Chica quickly got over as a crowd favorite, thanks in part to Mia’s energy and charm that no mask could disguise. For about a year, Mia devoted herself to Luna and to the sciences in almost equal measure, but gradually the lure of the ring began to outshine that of the laboratory. About a month into her fourth year, Mia dropped out of A&M, instead traveling south to Mexico to further hone her craft. She put off telling her parents about leaving school as long as she could, fearful of their disappointment, only telling them on the brink of what would have been the end of her fifth year and graduation.
There WAS disappointment, but not disapproval. Her parents let her know that so long as she was doing what she loved, they would be behind her, no matter what. For another three years, Luna continued to work in Mexico, eventually being defeated for her mask—but this did little to dampen the locals’ affection for her. Now, though, Luna wants to make a bigger name for herself back in the US…
The Luna Chica is what’s known as a “high motor” player: she is extremely energetic and daring, showing little sign of fear in the ring. She is engaging with the fans, not afraid to take matches down to the floor, and is known to often celebrate wins with the audience.
