The FAWN Arena, two weeks ago…
Fresh off one of Mercy Ellis’s infamous two hour striking seminars, Bunny Cooper and Chloe Fields wanted nothing more than a hot shower and a double order of the Slaughtered Lamb’s legendary gravy fries. The pair of Upstarts would’ve taken this pair of pleasures in any order, but since the locker room was much closer, bathing won out. “That was one heck of a Roaring Elbow you threw back there, Straw.” Cooper noted as they trudged down that last long stretch of hallway. “Even Mercy sounded impressed and she’s NEVER impressed!”
Fields smiled, nodded and gingerly pulled the gaudy pink scrunchee from her hair. “Thanks Bun! But that knee of yours was nothing to sneeze at either! I thought you were gonna bust one of the seams on the bag.”
Bunny’s smile matched the redhead’s. “I don’t know about busting seams, but I’d be just as happy if it shut Soledad up for a minute or two.”
Closing on the door now, Chloe laughed aloud, then put a hand over her mouth as if embarrassed. “She does talk a lot, doesn’t--” The redhead had wrapped a hand around the handle of one the locker room doors and tugged only to find it firmly locked. “What the?” She pulled it again and got the same result.
“It’s locked?” Bunny sounded doubtful, took the other handle and gave it a tug. Sure enough, it didn’t budge. “Why’s it locked in the middle of the afternoon?” Cooper muttered. “It’s not like this place is dead to--”
“Sssshhhhhh!” Chloe put a finger to her lips, tilted her head and pressed an ear to the door. “Can you hear that? It sounds like something’s thumping around inside.”
“Really?”
Bunny leaned in, then let out a high pitched ‘eep!’ when a voice behind them said, “Nothin’ to worry your pretty little heads about ladies, that’s just a little pest control in progress.”
Chloe and Bunny whirled as one to discover Leah Montoya leaning against the far wall, a faint smirk on her lips. “What do you mean, pest control?” the blonde asked. “I haven’t seen anything in months! Is it--”
“Oooohhhh, it’s not roaches, is it?” Fields cringed. “I know I shouldn’t stomp on anything but--”
Something THWHUMPED hard against the other side of the door, making both ingénues jump.
“Not roaches.” Montoya grinned. “A rat. A big, meddling rat. Don’t worry though, there’s a really good exterminator on the job.”
“What do we need an exterminator for?”
All three ladies looked down the hall and saw Susannah Burlingame heading their way.
“There’s a rat in the locker room!” Chloe was quick to answer despite the Rainmaker’s rather worrisome reputation. “Leah says maintenance has an exterminator in there!”
Sue’s eyes narrowed as she looked between the Texan and the double doors. “Is that so? Was it maintenance that gave you that key ring, Leah?”
Montoya’s hand went to a cumbersome ring hanging off her right hip. “These are my keys, Susie. Got a lot of keys on the ranch, ya know.”
Susan’s response was delayed by a loud THUD and a resounding CRASH from inside the locker room. All but certain now, Burlingame beckoned at Leah. “Open the doors, Leah. Now.”
The strong brunette answered with an insolent shrug. “And if I don’t?”
“I’ll have Pandora repeat the request.”
Leah didn’t quite flinch, but she most definitely stood a little straighter. “Now now, no need for that, Susie. I’m sure the job’ll be done here in a--” A polite knocking came from the far side of the door. “See?” Leah was all smiles again as she pulled the key ring loose and made for the door. “Everything’s fine. No need to call in the World Beater.” She slipped a key into the lock, twisted it to one side and opened it at once.
“Damned stubborn rat!” Lyssa Zahn told her partner as she ambled out of the formerly locked room. “Little f*cker wouldn’t go down until I--” Leah cleared her throat and tipped her head toward the other women. Zahn looked their way and smiled. “Everything’s fine, ladies. You might wanna hold up on taking a shower for a few minutes though, that thing made an awful mess.” The Social Media Star was wiping the knuckles of her right hand with a paper towel. Susan saw a spatter of red when she balled it up and tossed it into a trash can.
“What’ve you done, Zahn?”
Lyssa’s smirk got wider. “Nothing you wouldn’t approve of, Burly. C’mon Leah, let’s take a walk.”
With that the Black Hats shouldered their way through their coworkers and strolled out of sight without a care in the world.
“Well that was weird.” Bunny muttered as she went for the door again. “At least now we can take a-- oh, holy crap.”
Susan dipped between the Upstarts and stepped into the locker room. A hand went to her mouth. “Mother…f*ck.” Turning her back on the scene, Burlingame stepped into the doorway and pointed a finger at Bunny. “Go get Vannacutt, he’ll be in his office. NOW, Bunny.” Cooper didn’t hesitate, she simply turned around and raced for the infirmary. “Straw, you go find Veronica. I think I saw her in the weight room an hour back. If she’s not there, try the archive.”
“Ok, Sue.” Chloe turned to leave, then stopped and looked over her shoulder. “What do I tell her?”
“Her big sister needs her. Now get moving.”
The redhead did as ordered, leaving Sue to head back into the locker room in the hopes of bringing Rachel around before the doc arrived.
