LILY BURLINGAME:
SYDNEY DESCHAIN:
The video package hyping tonight’s World Title ended and Season’s Beatings returned to the ring, where Lily Burlingame waited for her guest to finish saluting the fans. Dressed in faded black jeans and her classic ‘blueprint’ design tee-shirt, Sydney Deschain raised an index finger high overhead, a simple sigil that earned a roaring wall of noise in return. Dropping to the mat as Metallica started to fade, the Technical Marvel strode over to the youngest Burlingame sister and took the extra mic she was offered.
When the FAWN Arena was as quiet as it was going to get, Lily said, “Sydney, the front office told me you asked for this time to make an announcement regarding next year, so consider the floor yours.”
Deschain gave her a small smile and a murmur of thanks before turning her attention to the crowd. “I’ve never been one to spend a lot of time on words when there’s girls waiting behind that curtain for a match, so I’ll make this brief. It’s often said that you’re never supposed to ask a woman her age and that goes double in the professional wrestling business, where most promotions want their fans to think the talents are perpetually in their mid-twenties or that those talents should start looking over their shoulders the instant they turn thirty. Well yours truly celebrated her birthday a couple months back and with it came the twenty-fifth anniversary of my first professional wrestling match.”
She would’ve gone on but several voices in the front row started a ‘YOU LOOK GREAT!’ chant and soon the rest of the crowd was in on it.
Syd nodded modestly, then quieted them with a waved hand. “Thanks, but I’m not out here fishing for compliments. I’m here to tell you that my existing FAWN contract expires on December thirty-first and I won’t be renewing the standard five year contract that’s been offered.”
Another pause as the Marvel’s fans erupted in disheartened boos which shortly coalesced into ‘PLEASE DON’T GO!’ Lily took the opportunity to add her opinion. “I’m with them, Sydney. For someone who’s done this for twenty-five years you look like you could go another ten without breaking a sweat.”
That quieted the throng enough for Deschain to answer. “I appreciate that Lily and it’s with no small pride that I can tell you Anciline and Edward said the same thing to me when I spoke to them earlier. Truth be told, you’re probably right. I could do this for another decade and love every minute of it, but age catches up to everyone eventually and considering that I’ve been blessed with a quarter century’s worth of competition against the best women in the world without enduring any injury that cost me more than a few weeks of ring time, it strikes me as selfish to ask for too much more.”
Syd paused to let them mull that over for a moment.
Eventually it was Lily who replied for the assembled FAWNatics. “So are you telling me this is the last time we’re going to see Sydney Deschain in a FAWN ring?”
The veteran brunette grinned and shook her head ‘no’. “On the contrary. I said I wasn’t signing the standard five year contract. I have however signed a one year extension. It’s not what you’d call full time, in fact I’m only working twelve dates. One a month, every pay-per-view from January to December of 2015. I’ve got a dance card with a dozen slots open and THAT’S why I’m here.” Twisting her head toward the entryway, Sydney said, “I’m looking for the best of the best FAWN has to offer. I don’t care if we’ve wrestled a hundred times before or never crossed paths until the night we get in the ring. If you’d like to be a part of this farewell tour, the January contract is ready and waiting for whoever wants--”
The speakers coughed static then smoothed out into the keening electronic wail that heralded the arrival of Lily’s oldest sister and FAWN’s biggest party crasher. Brushing through the curtain, Susannah Burlingame spread her arms wide for the fans, but never let her eyes leave the brunette in the center of the ring. A moment later she started down the ramp and was climbing the steel steps in no time at all. Burlingame hopped over the top rope like a flyweight and went straight for Lily, or her microphone to be more precise.
SUSANNAH BURLINGAME:
“Syd, you know I’m not one to interrupt such a special occasion,” jeers from the fans earned a knowing smirk from the Rainmaker, “but you just told the girls in the locker room a lie and I wanted to clear that up so there’s no hurt feelings later.”
Sydney arched an eyebrow. She didn’t think Sue would actually start anything with her sis looking on but it paid to be cautious around the Ace of the Black Court. “I wasn’t aware of any faulty information in my announcement, Susan. But if you’d like to enlighten me, you’re more than welcome to do so.”
“Gladly. You told them the January contract was waiting at the front office. But that’s not true. I know so, because it’s right here,” Susan flipped up the back edge of her ‘Rainmaker’ tank-top and pulled a folded piece of paper from the waistband of her black leather pants. She tapped the document against Deschain’s chest then added, “and my name is on it. We’ve got unfinished business, honey. And if twenty fifteen is my last opportunity to kick your ass I’m going to make sure this retirement tour of yours starts off with the most humiliating defeat of your career.”
Sydney thought about it for a moment before answering. “Go ahead and try, Susan. It’s only fair. After all, I am responsible for the most humiliating defeat of your career… even if you and I are the only ones that know about it.”
Burlingame’s smirk curdled in an instant. Almost eight years removed and the thought of that night on beach of Darkscore Island was enough to make her blood boil. “Yeah, you are.” she answered with none of her usual arrogance. “I had you under my ass two summers ago. But that bytch Connor saved you at the last second. That’s not going to happen this time, Syd. In January you and I are going one on one. I’m going to make you LOOK old. I’m going to make you FEEL old. Then I’m gonna settle in and put some hard miles on that pert little nose of yours.” She tried to punctuate by pressing her index finger into the tip of Deschain’s nose, but the other brunette grabbed her wrist and squeezed hard enough to make Burlingame twist loose.
“I’m glad you’re interested in helping send me off in style, Susan. And I LOVE the fact that you signed the first contract. Because after I beat you, you’re going to have to spend a whole year realizing that you already took your shot at me and you missed.”
Susannah chested in on her and Syd chested right back, the longtime rivals nose to nose for one of the last times. “I’m going to ruin you in that match, Deschain. No one else will dare sign the other contracts because they’ll know they can’t raise the bar I set and you… you’ll just wile away the last year of your career in seclusion. Happy retirement, bytch.”
The Rainmaker dropped the mic at her feet, whirled around and stormed out of the ring without so much as a glance at her younger sister, who looked both worried and embarrassed by Sue’s aggressive outburst. Regaining her composure quickly enough, Lily started to ask Syd for her thoughts, then saw the look on her face and decided against it. Instead she turned to the camera and said, “There you have it ladies and gentlemen, a blockbuster announcement for the New Year, the Ace of the Black Court versus the Woodsboro Mangler for the very last time. Don’t miss it!”
