“Miss Christian? Your 11:30 is here.” the disembodied voice informed the commissioner of FAWN over the intercom.
“Alright, send them in.” Bethany Christian answered, pressing the button on the intercom. She hadn’t recognized the name on her schedule, but for all she knew she could be a hot new prospect, or a prospective talent scout, so she chose to keep the appointment, purely out of curiosity. So it was with a look of surprise, and a hint of annoyance, that Bethany looked up to see a familiar face walk through her door
“Heya, boss!” Cassava Onika greeted the commissioner cheerfully.
“Go away, Onika,” Bethany returned the greeting with a scowl, “You’re interrupting a meeting. Brian,” she called out to her assistant, since the door was still being held open by Cassava’s prodigious backside, “I thought you said my 11:30 was here…A -”
“ - Karen Whiteworth?” Cassava finished her sentence and stuck out her hand, “Pleased to meet you!” Bethany’s scowl deepened as she quickly realized what had happened.
“So, you scheduled an appointment under a false name, because you assumed I wouldn’t take the meeting if it were you?”
“Yup!” Cassava answered, still wearing her veneer of cheerfulness.
“Hmmm…” Bethany drummed her fingers on her desk as she turned things over in her head. She was annoyed by the deception, not to mention Cassava’s presence in general. However, she had to oddly admire the Internet Sensation’s initiative, and her curiosity had been piqued even more. “Alright,” she finally said, “what’s so important that you felt the need to go through all this subterfuge just to get an audience with me?”
Cassava grinned smugly, which did not escape Bethany’s notice, and reached into a basket she was carrying, throwing a bunch of glitter and rose petals into the air. Bethany massaged her temples as the detritus cascaded onto her desk. “You’re cleaning that up.” she said flatly, unamused by the BMD Champion’s antics.
“Worth it!” Cassava replied with a satisfied giggle before pulling up a chair to sit across from FAWN’s boss.
“Please, Onika, I don’t have time for this nonsense!” Bethany said with a groan, “Either state your business or please just leave!”
Cassava nodded and clapped her hands together excitedly, “Two of the greatest women in the world, Kanako -my Kankan- and Trixie are getting MARRIED!" she explained, saying the last part with a squeal.
This got Bethany’s attention, and she tilted her head slightly as she looked at Cassava. “Miss Akiyama and Miss Decker? So, the rumors were true. This is lovely news, Cassava, but what does it have to with me or FAWN, save that they both work here?”
Cassava lifts her head up then lowers it, clearly frustrated, "Are you telling me you, Bethany Christain, cannot see the financial opportunity in celebrating this? Time to sell some tickets!" She stabs a finger on the desk for emphasis, "We got a PPV coming up. Lets host the wedding and make wrestling history!"
“What?” Bethany replied with an incredulous tone to her voice. “No, don’t be ridiculous! Why would we waste valuable pay per view time on a wedding?”
“I’m glad you asked!” Cassava chriped, rising from her chair. She then pulled down a projection screen that Bethany had installed several years before. However, she had never used it in the presence of any wrestler, so she was very perturbed as to how Cassava knew about it.
Bethany pinched the bridge of her nose, “Very well, Miss Onika…If it’ll get this nonsense over with quicker…proceed.”
Cassava grinned triumphantly and tapped her phone and a slide appeared on the screen: a collage of wrestling weddings throughout the decades, "In-ring weddings are a staple of pro wrestling, yet FAWN has NEVER had one. it would be a first in the company's history and firsts always means an uptick in awareness and that means more in sponsors and advertising."
Bethany let out a deep sigh, “Alright, I’m officially listening,” she said, begrudgingly acknowledging Cassava’s research, “Continue.”
Cassava tapped her phone again, and the image changed to pictures of cool, hip, sexy and wholesome lesbian and non-binary couples. "Because our country is a cesspool of willful ignorance... this will be the FIRST wrestling wedding with two women. A first that'll be great for PR and and word of mouth reputation for the company, and let's be honest... you"
Bethany scowled at being reminded of her recent public relations headaches. She suspected that Cassava was largely responsible for it, but she couldn’t quite figure out how, nor did she have any proof. “You’ve…certainly put a lot of thought into this endeavor, I’ll give you that.”
“I certainly did!” Cassava replied with a smug tone before continuing, "The best part is you don't have to do anything but give us the time. Me and the bride's will plan the whole thing." She then tapped her phone again to cut to a hand-drawn picture of the wedding going off without a hitch.
Bethany looks at the picture and lets out a sigh of resignation, “You’re not going to let this go, are you, Miss Onika?” she asked, already knowing the answer.
“No, I am not.” Cassava confirmed with a shake of her head.
Bethany squeezes her eyes shut, as if she’s trying to force the words out of her mouth. She was loathe to give Cassava anything, but she couldn’t deny that she was correct that this is an unmistakable opportunity. “Very well. I can’t give you Slaybor Day, as that’s fully booked. But I will find a spot for Miss Akiyama and Miss Decker’s wedding on FAWNMania. Satisfied?”
Cassava barely stifled a gasp. She was pretty sure Bethany would give in when she laid out the pros in black and white. But FAWNMania? To see her beloved Kankan and Trixie get married on FAWN’s biggest show of the year was more than she could’ve hoped for. “Very satisfied,” she finally answered, covering up her shock quickly, “This is going to turn out great, Bethany, you'll see. It'll be fun on buns!" she assured her as she retracted the screen and took her leave, skipping happily.
“Fun on buns…” Bethany repeated with a scoff as she watched Cassava leave. “Brian,” she said over the intercom, “Hold all my calls and appointments for the rest of the day. After that ordeal, I think I’ve earned the rest of the day off!”
