Many months ago…
Bethany Christain, commissioner of FAWN and all-powerful matriarch of the wrestling world sat in her well-furnished office at her expensive oak desk and stared angrily at her monitor.
BETHANY CHRISTAIN
On the screen was an email from the organization’s head of Social Media Outreach, a link to a video from popular wrestling journalist Harold Pryce. The face of the pro wrestling department for Whyphliosphy: an entertainment news website and magazine from the United Kingdom. The forwarded video is titled Unsafe Working Conditions at FAWN? So the ring general turned corporate leader knew her day was shot right off the jump. Bethany breathed heavily through her nose, irritated at the prospect of dealing with dirtsheets. Huffing with derision Bethany clicks the link, slightly mollified by the man in the video having a boyishly handsome face and a charming accent.
The bearded Brit stands in front of a green screen with images of people relating to the story of the day flowing behind him, Harold expounds jovially, “Hello, my very good friends! Whyphilosphy Wrestling has news of unrest within FAWN management centred around former wrestler, FAWN Commissioner and my future wife, Bethany Christian.”
Bethany gives a little scoff at that, “I’d snap you in half, little boy,” but the little shimmy in her shoulders suggests she’s open to the idea.
The journalist continues, “Ms. Christain has largely retired from an on-air presence these last few years but maintains an established booking method based on putting the women considered ‘Babyfaces” in her roster in overwhelming situations since her employment, often with humiliating results. While this made for entertaining television, it put enormous strain on the wrestler’s bodies and minds. Many blame her direct management for Kylie Sanders’s breakdown into a villainous figure.”
The background shifted into a more innocent and clearly injured Kylie Sanders facing off against Cynthia Mitchell, Chrissy Daniels, and Lisa Dream in a gauntlet match with LaKeisha Bates as the referee.
“In fact, it was after that incident the board members of FAWN pressured Ms. Christain into a more hands-off management style when their merchandise sales plummeted for a period of time with the premature death of the Kylie Corps.”
The background shifts again to various photos of Cassava Onika and Cassandra Beckett battling Bootyshock and Shea London’s handicap match against The California Quakes, then Trixie Decker facing off against Kate Grimm and Taffy Black.
“We still see elements of this targeting mindset today, the recent examples being Shea London and Trixie Decker. In what is likely her last fight in FAWN, Shea London faced insurmountable odds for any superstar and was given a send-off as disrespectful as possible. Shea London is the latest of a dirge of FAWN’s established talent to leave the promotion for the new organization, Empress Pro Wrestling. We’ll do a more in-depth examination of why those talents are leaving in a video to be released later today.”
Bethany lets out a sigh of resigned exasperation. When it rains it pours.
Harold Pryce continues, “Trixie Decker has been suffering the most lately from FAWN’s mix of willful neglect and targeting. Since trying to forfeit against Kanako Akiyama out of concern for the other wrestler’s injury Trixie has been given a brutal schedule all over the country as a “FAWN Representative” for various indies, And to add on to that, a lot of these smaller promotions are, shall we say… less than reputable? After a series of gruelling matches in less than ideal environments that would have broken another woman, Trixie came through it stronger, with multiple titles, and the fans’ respect. Her award for amassing wins and putting on great shows in that hellacious tour was to be put in a surprise four-on-one match at FAWNMANIA by Anciline De Cyr, an “Alone in the dark” match. In what should have been a glorified gang assault, Trixie Decker persevered and secured the win, but suffered numerous injuries doing so, and suffered a personality break in the form of a being called ‘Beatrix’.
“After recovering from those injuries Decker faced off against De Cyr In a Coffin match that’s considered a modern classic. De Cyr admitted to years of interference and career blocking. Trixie’s Decker victory serving as a measure of revenge and a career highlight.”
Bethany drums her fingers on her new imported Italian Maple desk. That match was a real divisive moment. Both great, and damning press, fantastic buy rates for the download and blu-rays, but lots of tension in a roster fed up with the open corruption in the head offices. Bethany earned some points with some for giving Trixie the opportunity for payback, but she lost points with more for allowing Anciline her cruelty in the first place. “....well good content is good content.”
The green screen behind Harold Pryce shifts to more recent events “In the following months since, the Buns of Mass Destruction Champion Cassava Onika has released several video essays with in-depth analyses of the abuse targeted talents have received for Bethany Christian’s, Anciline De Cyr’s or Edward Dean Thomas’s pleasure. Trixie Decker recently suffered yet another beating from multiple ‘heel’ talents, these being Kate Grimm and Taffy Black. They were fired for the incident but then almost immediately rehired. Many people within the organization consider the initial firing to be a ‘slap on the wrist.’ Furthermore-”
Bethany clicks away from the video, growling, “That damn brat.” Signing the sole remaining member of the Kylie Corps turned out to be a double-edged sword. Her matches garnered a lot of attention due to the BMD’s pre-existing fanbase and always put on a lively show, but ever since Cassava waltzed through FAWN’s doors Bethany suffered blow after blow to her aura of invincibility while Cassava gained more influence. Making specialty watches, the BMD belt, leaks of corporate information leading to pay bumps and royalty increases for talent. At least with Emily West you know she’s planning something and what her end goal is, everything’s out in the open. This bottom-heavy stalker is chipping away at her livelihood by a thousand cuts. Nothing can be traced back to Onika that showcases malicious intent, except for…
“Ah hah,” Bethany spots the latest FAWN Finds video, Cassava Onika twerking to a mix of The Upstart Nation’s entrance themes. Every time ill fortune falls on the HBIC, Cassava releases another vid of her shaking what her momma gave her.
Bethany mutters to herself darkly, “There will be a day where I will brand those buns myself and you will beg for my mercy.” Her eyes dart in every direction following Cassava’s dancing cheeks, hate watching the video for inspiration.
ALOISIA BERGE
CASSAVA ONIKA
The door to Bethany’s office kicks open with a shocking crack and Aloisia Berge storms in, followed closely by a less angry Cassava. Aloisia round-houses the computer from Bethany’s desk. “You bitch!” she screamed, her German accent thick. “I’ve agreed to that embarrassing, degrading food fight with Cassava for one reason only. You swore to me you’d take care of Kate. You swore she’d be gone.” Aloisia pointed an accusing finger. “And don’t try to mince words or imply anything. You agreed to it specifically. Instead, she’s still around. I kept up my end of the bargain, Christian. You didn’t keep yours. A woman tried to end my friend’s career. She’s still here. Moreover, the bitch who fucked her over is still in the hierarchy! Now, if someone welched on their end of an agreement after you met your end, you’d move heaven and hell to end them and we both know it.”
Aloisia grabbed the desk and angrily shoved it aside. “So give me one good reason not to give you a taste of being on the other side of not keeping an agreement!”
If Bethany was intimated by the display of anger from the Polynesian powerhouse she expertly hid it. Raising her hands in a placating manner she put on her most soothing possible, “I know and I understand. I fulfilled my end of the deal, I fired those two idiots but another board member rehired them. Apparently, Kate is under some cross-promotion contract with an MMA group and it’s ‘not cost-effective'' to lose her. Plus Taffy and Kate are getting attention and that's hard to discount.”
“So fire them again,” Cassava interrupts,” And make sure they stay fired. Otherwise why don't I hospitalize every wrestler on the roster I don’t like? We both know I have a list…” A silent threat transfers to Bethany knowing that the names on that list are those that tormented Kylie Sanders in her more moral years.
“You owe me,” Aloisia growled. “And you know it. Moreover, you owe Trixie. She fought hard for you three times in insane matches after your second punished her for the crime of breaking a clause in her contract that doesn’t fucking exist.” Aloisia’s fist slammed onto the desktop. “You’re in charge here. You hit one damned roadblock, shrugged and said, ‘Oh well’ after someone below you - no, TWO people below you - went behind your back and over your head. Or is it just you got what you want so your word means shit?”
Bethany utters a reserved but booming “Okay,” and stands up. Inches away from chesting into her fellow big woman. “You need to watch your tone. I’m still your boss. And if you pitifully try to intimidate me again I’m shoving your head,” Bethany points to Cassava “In her ass. Then I’ll fire you, so take a breath.”
“If that’s all that’s needed to get you throwing hands I should have come here a lot sooner,” Cassava’s voice is cutely sardonic but has an odd coldness that's rare in The Superfan. “And don’t think I’ve forgotten you went out of your way to hire Aloisia to humiliate me in what’s going to be multiple matches… in exchange for doing your job!”
“If you're balking at a little public shaming you’re in the wrong business,’ Christain angles her head at the short Iowan. “At least you’re making a good paycheque.”
“Fine. I quit,” Aloisia said suddenly. “I’ve beyond fulfilled my contract. And I know a certain muckraking news organization that’s been up FAWN’s ass for months about unsafe conditions.” Aloisia smirked. “They’ve been begging me, for months now, to spill tea. I haven’t because you gave me your word. But since you’ve been ducking me over and over, how about my first act be going to them and telling just how de Cyr did a power move on you to put Trixie in a match you didn’t want, how exactly she continues to pull strings to keep Trixie out of matches while you’re not paying attention.” Aloisia tilted her head. “Oh, did you not know about that, Bethany? Yeah. You have a talent on the roster who, right this very instant, in seven other promotions, has SEVEN belts and is at her highest popularity and your second is actively keeping her off shows, leaving money on the table and making you look unaware.” Aloisia turned and headed towards the door.
Christain responds in an even tone, “If you step out that door, Trixie faces off Miranda Wainwright and Pandora in a threeway dance.”
Aloisia halts mid-step, pauses, and walks back to actually chest into the former wrestler this time. Speaking just above a whisper, “Are you seriously going down that route after all this? Have you not been paying attention? Have not thought of what I’d do in response?”
Bethany nods, “Of course, that’s why I was lying.” Cassava rolls her eyes and mutters, “typical.” The big brunette ignores the insubordination and continues, “But I will feed Keli Love to those two if you don’t listen. Trixie’s doing fantastic work, her having seven belts is a great advertisement of FAWN level of talent and I don’t want her overworked. And those other promotions don’t want their champion getting pantsed and losing on our PPVs.”
“Wow, that’s a good one!” Cassava’s eyes go wide in mock astonishment,” yous should cameo on my improv series, you’d do well.”
“Drop the act,” Aloisia said. “Just… for once, drop the act, okay? Trixie beat four people all trying to literally end her career. You’ve got a VP who constantly ignores what you told her not to do right under your nose, and obviously learned nothing from what you put her through against Trixie. You are making it abundantly clear that you got what you want and you’re complacent about the obvious issues at hand.” She leaned into Bethany’s ear and whispered, “As for Kelli, throw her to the dogs. I don’t care.”
Aloisia turned and stormed towards the door, one foot moving through the frame.
With a huff of angry resignation, Bethany makes an offer, ”Double the purse. for each of the matches, I hired you for, Onika as well.” She tilts her head at The Superfan who has stood still since their big entrance, not bothering to negotiate with the content creator at all.
A point that rankles Cassava just a little bit, pointing back and forth from herself to the commissioner, “Isn’t that an offer you should make directly to me as well? Who says I’m interested in any money from you at all? I hear another company’s starving for talent right now.”
Bethany looks at Cassava with a level of condescension reserved normally for a Sanders, “Like you’re really giving up a chance to wrestle Berge again?” Cassava opens her mouth to retort.., then closes it and nods in reluctant agreement, she had a point.
Aloisia halted. “I won’t speak for Cassava. You hammer the details out with her. I don’t even care about the doubled purse. But I want results. With Kate. Taffy. And de Cyr.” Aloisia narrowed her eyes. “Or you.”
Bethany disregards that threat without a response and focuses on the meat of the problem. “I’m working on something right now that should satisfy all involved, including Trixie. In the meantime, I’m suspending Kate and Taffy for their activities until further notice.”
“Bout time!” Cassava chirps. “Feels like you’d have to be somebody’s daughter to get anything down around here.” Bethany whips her neck to stare daggers at Onika, “Careful there Kylie-Two. You don’t want me angry.”
“Is you being angry related to you being competent? I’d say it’s worth it.” Cassava’s practically content in this tense atmosphere. “I’m down to discuss future matches, but if you remember MY contract as clauses where I got to agree to weird ‘old school’ stipulations. I did the food thing because it sounded fun. Anything more than that? I’ll see you at the negotiating table.”
Aloisia nodded quietly. “Fine. But, seriously, you need to deal with De Cyr. Not for our sake. For yours. She’s disregarding your orders. This will only get worse.”
Really feeling Aloisia’s power right now, Onika sidles next to her current partner in crime(though Cassava inherently sees Aloisia as an extreme Superior), “Yeah! Wouldn’t want to see us when we’re angry. At most you’ve seen me discontented, wouldn’t want more bad press now…” with that not-so-ominous threat the HIPster wraps her arm around Berge’s and they walk out of the office on a high note. Cassava doing her best to be a barnacle on Aloisia’s boat, pressing as tightly as possible to the German Hawaiian’s composed amusement, jokingly commentating “I’m not going to carry you Cassava.”
The Commissioner of FAWN looks around her dishevelled off and bites back a scream. The disrespect, the temerity of those two to come to her office, to BETHANY CHRISTIAN’s office and demand things. And that Cassava, casually drinking in the chaos of the fire that The Superfan has been feeding since day one. Berge has a right to her anger so she gets at the smallest of passes. And judging by Aloisia’s comments about Kelli Love, and her lack of mentioning any regret for mopping the dirty floor with Cassava in Dinner Destruction tells the HBIC that the doctor may still be of use. It was clear the Hot Teacher enjoyed toying with Cassava like a cat with a mouse, to experience that again with a big cash payday, more exposure and a potential win on her record is a deal few could say no to.
She steps over to her intercom, upended on it’s side from Aloisia’s shove of the desk. She presses the button, “Tiffany, call Reginald Worthington. He’s in the company gym right now, tell him to come straight up without changing, I have heavy things for him to move.”
“Yes Ms. Christa-”
Bethany cuts off the call, she knows it will be done. “Maybe I’ll help wipe his sweat off, after…” stowing an inner fire with thoughts of the muscular referee and Harold of Whyphilosphy. Bethany channels that passion into brainstorming a humiliating, degrading ‘Old School’ FAWN match she can get Aloisia to agree to, and get the good Doctor to convince Cassava to agree to.
