Background: Alejandra Alicea should have amounted to nothing in her life. After all, she was born in a poor, working class part of Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Her father worked hard in the cane fields, her mother did double duty raising Alejandra and her three brothers while also working as a maid for one of the local tourist resorts. On top of that, she was a thin child, never quite having enough to eat, always a bit scrawny.
But if there was one thing her parents ingrained into Alejandra, it was that you could do anything if you worked hard enough. Alejandra's grandparents didn't own a home, but her family did. The previous generation didn't finish high school, but her parents did, and her oldest brother even made it into college with a scholarship. Puerto Rico might be just a territory of the US, but they were still Americans, and America was the land of opportunity. Alejandra could be anything she wanted, if she just TRIED hard enough... and what caught her eye, her dream, was to be a pro wrestler. The moment she saw her first show on their barely-working television, she knew what she wanted to do with her life.
So, she trained. She worked hard to overcome her physical limits, and as she grew up, her body blossomed. The moment she could get a job, she waited tables, worked shitty service jobs, put in time with her father in the fields, with her mother at the resorts. Hard physical work plus the money she saved up let her train more, and then, she scraped up enough to go to a wrestling school. Pluck, determination, and stubborness got Alejandra through, and into a small Puerto Rican promotion.
And then Alejandra got her ass kicked. Not just once, but again and again. But there was something about how she pushed on, that she had fire in her gut and in her heart, that endeared her to the fans. And through it all, she trained. She preservered. She learned. And over two years in the ring, she forged her body into rock hard muscle, learned to push through the pain, mastered her wrestling style... and then she started to win. The story of her trials and triumphs not only won her over new fans, but cemented the ones she had gained. It wasn't a matter of when Alejandra would get a match for the local strap, but when.
When she won that grueling match, people outside of the territory took notice, and after another year of staying in top competition in Puerto Rico, some months with and some months without the championship but always striving for it, FAWN put forth an offer.
